“There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.” - Michelle Obama

March is International Women’s Month. While recognizing Women’s History Month each March creates the space to reflect on the progress that has been made towards gender equity, and celebrate the many contributions of women in history, culture and society, it should also serve as an opportunity to refocus our efforts towards creating a more just world where people of all genders can thrive. NAMI Metro Suburban’s very existence is thanks to five women. Our founding mothers were parents of adult children with mental illness. They would see each other regularly while accompanying their children at monthly psychiatric visits to Madden State Hospital. The women wanted a supportive community for their children, a stigma-free place that they could socialize and develop new recovery skills, so they opened the NAMI Drop-In Center. After 30 years, it is the oldest free-standing Drop-in center in the State of Illinois. To this day, most of the leadership roles at NAMI are held by women and the mission implemented by our founding mothers is still at the core of what we do every single day. We celebrate the strong, compassionate and hardworking women of NAMI Metro Suburban this month and every month and we are honored to work alongside them.
