May Mental Health Awareness Month

Breaking the Stigma and Promoting Well-being

May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month. Founded by Mental Health American in 1949, this month is dedicated to raising awareness about mental health, reducing stigma, and promoting overall well-being. Mosaic Counseling and Wellness is dedicated to raising awareness of mental health awareness and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health throughout the year, but especially in the month of May. We would like to highlight resources available to the communities and families that we serve.

Mental health is a crucial aspect of our overall well-being, just as important as physical health. It encompasses our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act, and plays a significant role in how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. It is essential to recognize that mental health is a continuum, and everyone experiences their own mental health in different ways in different times.

Unfortunately, there is still a significant stigma attached to mental health issues. This stigma often leads to discrimination, silence, and misunderstanding. Many individuals hesitate to seek help or discuss their struggles due to fear of judgment. Mental Health Awareness Month aims to challenge stigma and create a more supportive and understanding environment.  Mosaic Counseling and Wellness strives to make access to mental health less overwhelming, more timely and individually centered.  Our team works very hard to connect each individual contacting us with an appropriate resource.  If our team isn’t the right fit, we will work to connect you with someone who is.

It is crucial to emphasize that seeking support for mental health is a sign of strength, not weakness.  Mental Health America has a screening tool for you to “take a checkup from the neck up.”  You can find the tool at www.mhascreening.org

You can reach the caring and dedicated clinicians and psychiatrists at Mosaic Counseling and Wellness at New Patient Form (mosaiccare.com) or by calling us at 708.628.8000.

Taking care of our mental health should be a priority for everyone. Here are some ways that you can promote your own mental well-being:

  • Self-Care: Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. This can include hobbies, exercise, spending time with loved ones, or practicing mindfulness and meditation.
  • Seek Support: Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or professionals if you need someone to talk to. Remember, you are not alone, and there is no shame in seeking help.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your daily routine. Mindfulness can help reduce stress, increase self-awareness, and improve overall mental well-being.
  • Educate Yourself: Take the time to educate yourself about mental health conditions, symptoms, and available resources. Understanding mental health can help reduce stigma and provide support to those in need.
  • Support Others: Be a source of support for your friends, family, or colleagues who may be struggling with their mental health. Offer a listening ear, encourage open conversations, and show empathy and understanding.

May Mental Health Awareness Month serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental health and breaking the stigma associated with it. By raising awareness, promoting open conversations, and supporting each other, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society. Let us use this month as an opportunity to learn, grow, and advocate for mental well-being, not just in May but throughout the year. Remember, mental health matters, and together, we can make a difference. We are making a difference.
